What to do? Stick it out longer or move as fast as I can?

Luke asked:

So here is my problem. Currently, I’m at the Crane School of Music in Potsdam, NY. It’s a school with some weight to it’s name, particularly for the music education program I’m in. So far (it’s only been 2 weeks now), it’s been okay, but I really am having strong second thoughts. First of all, it is not an effortless thing. Although I realize the fact that college is not easy, wherever you are, it’s not the kind of hard work I’m finding myself enjoying at all. And although at first I could see myself teaching music for the rest of my life, I just don’t see it happening anymore. I’m a material person, so I would prefer a job that at least might be better paying. Another thing that matters tremendously to me is fashion. I read Vogue almost religiously, cover to cover every issue. The thing is I know that it is an extremely difficult industry to get into. My dream job would be to write for Vogue or another such magazine, but I don’t know if it’s worth the risk involved. Any advice? Help:(

What would be your thoughts about double-majoring in Computer Science and Music Education?

badoil_49 asked:

I feel that by majoring in one course and minoring in the other would restrict me in the long run. I plan to do be a band director and/or do some computer programming.

The reason I want to double-major is so that I could be a full-time band director, and then could do computer stuff at night or on the weekends. It would also give me a job to do during the summer when school’s out.

I would not be able to direct a band with a music minor, and I wouldn’t be chosen for programming stuff with only a computer minor. As far as I see, this is the best way to go.

I’m well aware that these two fields aren’t very related, and I would most likely have to take 2 more years of college (preferrably one). This would work out the best to make this all work in my opinion.

So, do you think this is a possibility? Has anyone had something similar? Any comments? It’s very much appreciated.

(If it means anything, I plan to attend UW-Madison.)

What kind of education is usually needed if I want to help out in the music industry?

pop_rocker asked:

i’m getting my undergraduate degrees next year in two completely unrelated fields (psychology and economics). i’d like to do something along the lines of music editing. would i have to start all over again and get a different undergraduate degree? or is it likely for me to get into a master’s program (i know, a lot are very difficult to get into)?

Help! Anyone in music, history, lit, education, college education?

Erin Sizz asked:

What I really want to do is be a music teacher and eventually teach music theory, history, and/or literature at the college level. I know I have to have my doctorate for that.

Some people have told me to start by majoring in Elem. Education and then take the certification tests to work my way up to teaching at the higher levels. I was also told that history and lit teachers are not in demand. I live in FL and there is a teacher’s certification program for those who already have their bachelor’s.

Teaching younger children just doesn’t interest me. I don’t want to waste 4 years studying for an Elem. Ed. degree that won’t help me reach my goal.

Should I go ahead and major in History, Music, or Lit. (what I really want to study) and then get my teacher’s certification? Or should I major in Elem. Ed. and just get my master’s in the other fields?

Please help! I go back to school in January after 4 years of being away. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you so much!

Why do we need music in schools?

sarai_kristi asked:

Some schools in my area have been getting rid of their music programs. As a dedicated former choir kid and marching band fan ( I graduated in ‘06), I plan on writing letters to my Board of Education and superintendent about why they should not get rid of the music program in our district. I know how the programs have affected me and my friends, but I was also hoping to include statistics and a long list of jobs related to music. Anyone know anything that could help me out?

Wouls it be practical to double major in Computer Science and Music Recording/Technology?

confused asked:

I know these fields are very unrelated, but i love music in all it’s forms. Everything from in the studio with a band, to in the auditorium with a choir, to on stage in a musical. it’s become a passion. the problem is i started very late in my musical career. i only have 2 real years of experience in ensembles. i couldn’t fit music theory into my schedule though. i just feel like i got started to late and now i’m not prepared of music major auditions.
anyway, i’ve always loved computers and working with them and problem solving and coding. plus, i know computer programming is a growing field with decently high salaries.
so what i’d really love to do is combine them together and develop software for music and/or recording. like Finale, Cakewalk, Sonar, etc, etc. but is this really a realistic idea? will i end up wasting my time on a education in music?
ps: i have been accepted already to the schools of my choice for computer science, i’m just considering a dual major or minor in music.

Has anyone auditioned at SUNY Potsdam? ?

ichgrollenicht asked:

What was the process like?
What pieces did you play and on what instrument?
Did you make it in?
How high is the competition to make it in for pianists?
I am considering auditioning for the music education program next year and any advice would be greatly appreciated.
