Preparing to get my Masters in Music Education?
timbobandit asked:
Hey guys, I’m a sophomore at a liberal arts school. I’m currently getting my B.A. in Education with a concentration in Music.
My question is, will that be enough to get me into a good Masters program for Music Education? Should I transfer to a music school and get a B.M. in Music Ed instead?
I should probably note that I’m from NY and my B.A. is in Early Childhood education. I’m looking to be the primary music teacher at an elementary school (ie. teach the general music class as well as maybe lead an ensemble).
My question is really, will a good music school (Im particularly looking at Crane in Potsdam, NY, but I know it’s very competitive) laugh me out the door because I don’t have a B.M.? Would a B.A. in EC Education even leave me eligible to go to music school for my masters?

Does Hope College in MI have a OK instrumental music program?
helpme asked:
Although we are looking at music education, my son may be good enough to go into performance at the Masters level and wants to make sure he is getting good enough training to do so.
My son would concentrate in Saxaphone, with a first love of Jazz.
They have an adjunct sax teacher, but a full time jazz program leader. He is also accepted at Central Mich and MSU, but we like the small liberal arts atmosphere of Hope.
I know Hope is undergrad only. I was assuming my son would transfer to get a Masters in Music. So perhaps the question is how would reputable Masters programs feel about Hope?

CSU Fresno or San Diego State?
S.C asked:
I am torn between these two schools, they are both my top choices, and they both have a great music education program, and they both have great marching bands, fresno is much cheaper, but san diego is in a much better community. What’s the better choice?

What colleges offer both a language interpreting program AND a program in music performance?
admiral_n_20 asked:
I’m trying to figure out where I want to go to college. I’ve been debating between becoming an interpreter, as I love languages, and my mom is becoming an American Sign Language interpreter, I think that would be fun; and between music education, I’ve played guitar for 8 years, love it, and thought I’d enjoy teaching music at a college. However I think I’d prefer being an interpreter, and also I think part of the reason I’d want to do music is simply to have the chance of going through college focused on guitar, it’d be so enjoyable. So I decided I’d go for interpreting, and double-major in that and in music performance in guitar. However trying to look for colleges that would offer something like that is difficult. I live in Charlotte, NC and would prefer to go somewhere not TOO far away…hopefully within six hours perhaps. Please, suggest others, but consider that too.
Oh, and for my language, I’m native in english, and would be interested in interpreting Spanish or Japanese, initially at least. And for guitar, I’d prefer a jazz program over classical. Thanks so much for your help!

Which university has a better music program, SDSU or UCSD? I’m trying to figure out where to transfer to. ?
Calixica asked:
I’m transfering from Palomar College and I want to stay in So California. Even though those schools probably aren’t the best known music universities, I’d like to know which one is better. Or, if you have knowledge of any music conservatories that offer a major in music I’d love to know. Also, I’m thinking of focusing on a Music Education major to try to become a University professor in the future. Thanks for your help!

University of South Alabama - Good school to study music?
Stevie. [Gabor] asked:
I’m a junior this year, so college has been on my mind a lot lately. I really want to be near the coast, so I’ve been looking into University of South Alabama and University of Mobile. I don’t know what I want to study just yet, but it’s probably going to be either music or education. Which of these two schools would be better for me? (Also, I’m agnostic, which is why I would really rather not go to a private school, but I’ve heard UOM’s music program is much better.)

i just don’t know what to do. i don’t know if i’m good enough, if i should do something better w/ my time.
scoot asked:
All i’ve ever wanted to do was sing, ever since i was about 3. i have taken dance classes, singing lessons, been in local musicals, in a show choir that performed at disney twice, and in church choirs ever since. i want to go to college for vocal performance and pedagogy, but i just don’t know if i’m good enough. i emailed one of my old vocal coaches to ask her what books a few songs were in because i was going to use them for my audition for vocal performance, and this is what she said (copied and pasted from the email):
“Hopefully you are getting some vocal coaching before your auditions. Have you thought of entering the music education program instead of vocal performance? I think you would make an excellent teacher.”
she’s always been sort of condescending towards me and my singing. she always told me i shouldn’t go for performance, but that i should go for music ed. which i sorta don’t want to do. i’d rather do private lessons.
and i have a new vocal coach now, and she’s
(continued) she’s supersweet, but when i told her i wanted to major in vocal performance in college, i could see in her eyes that she was thinking “WHAAAAAAAT?”
i just don’t know. it’s all i’ve ever wanted to do, and honestly, i can’t really do a whole lot of other things. i get good grades, and i make jewelry (whoopdy doo), but everything else i’ve done is singing, singing, singing. i just don’t know what else i’d do.
i just don’t know if i should forget about it and do something better with my time and stop fooling myself into thinking i can actually go to college for this and do something good with my life through singing. i don’t know what else i’d do, i have no experience in anything else. and when i apply to colleges, on the activities, it’s going to have years and years of singing experience and that’s it.
it’s just hard. i guess i’m just sorta stuck.
btw i sing classical music, and that’s the direction i want to go in. i can comfortably hit a high e above the staff. the colleges i’m applying to are state colleges.
i just don’t want to make a fool of myself.
