It really depends on where you’d like to work - You would start by going to college for a Bachelor of Music degree, and you would major in Music Education. Some states like New York require you to have a teacher’s certification, and you need to get your Masters degree within 5 years (after graduating with your BM degree). - Most of my friends who are working as music teachers got a job at a public school right after they received their Bachelor’s degree, and as they work at the school they also go for summer classes or night classes at a local college to work toward their Masters Degree. Some states have different requirements, so I would look into what you need based on your ideal living location. Salaries really don’t fluctuate more b/c of degree level because all teachers are at the same degree level…unless you get a Doctorate, in which case you’d probably teach at the University-level - your salary would be based mostly w/ experience.
Good luck!
Some Charter and Private schools allow teachers to teach w/out a Masters Degree, also. - But you’d want to work at a Public school for better $$$
Oh, Also - I’m not sure if this applies to all states, but you can get your Masters Degree paid for if you work at a public “inner-city” school in several cities - not sure if this applies to all cities - you should check that out b/c that would help you in the future if you don’t mind working in an inner-city school!
