Transfer student in music education: what schools are best?
rltfish asked:
I’m considering transferring because of finances. I’m a sophomore music education major, clarinet player. Some schools I’ve looked at transferring to are:
Ohio State
Brigham Young University
Louisiana State
Indiana University-Bloomington
UNC-Greensboro
I’m looking for average tuition costs and a good music program. Any I should add to the list to look at or any of the above that are great/not great?

You say you are considering transferring because of financial problems - so why don’t you go to a state school (the state you live in so you can qualify for in-state tuition)? Public/State schools where you’ll be granted in-state tuition will help immensely with finance…I’m not sure where you live so I can’t give you suggestions. My concern with the Universities you listed is that they all are in different states so you are bound to pay out-of-state tuition which can be quite pricey. Besides my recommendation to look at state schools in your state of residency (you usually have to live in the state for at least a year to have state residency), you might want to look at some private schools who usually offer a lot of financial aid (scholarships, etc.) - you can get this info in magazines/books (like U.S. News “Best Colleges”) - private schools tend to have funding from alumni and they have more scholarship opportunities then some public schools (so even though they seem expensive you might get a really good deal if you are talented and have great grades).
The schools you listed have good music programs except I’m not so sure about BYU (and UNC I am not familiar with, but they might have a good program). Univ of Michigan Ann Arbor is great along with Michigan State if you live in Michigan you should check those out…if you live in New York, check out SUNY Fredonia and SUNY Potsdam since they also have great music ed programs.
Good luck. Look into schools in your state.
