Help! Anyone in music, history, lit, education, college education?

Erin Sizz asked:

What I really want to do is be a music teacher and eventually teach music theory, history, and/or literature at the college level. I know I have to have my doctorate for that.

Some people have told me to start by majoring in Elem. Education and then take the certification tests to work my way up to teaching at the higher levels. I was also told that history and lit teachers are not in demand. I live in FL and there is a teacher’s certification program for those who already have their bachelor’s.

Teaching younger children just doesn’t interest me. I don’t want to waste 4 years studying for an Elem. Ed. degree that won’t help me reach my goal.

Should I go ahead and major in History, Music, or Lit. (what I really want to study) and then get my teacher’s certification? Or should I major in Elem. Ed. and just get my master’s in the other fields?

Please help! I go back to school in January after 4 years of being away. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you so much!

i really don’t think you need to study elementary education at all if you just want to teach at the college level. i would just stick with your idea of majoring in the subject first, and then getting a teaching degree or certification. i know plenty of people who teach college courses after years of just studying a certain subject on their own. they didn’t go through an entire teaching program. it’s just not necessary when you’re going to be teaching adults.

In the world of music, if you want to teach music theory or music history, you should just focus on that. Study music, get a B.A. in that, you can focus on theory but will still have to be a performer, then get a masters and doctorate in theory or history. Your first 4 years of college really gives you a chance to experiment around with what interests you most, so take a variety of classes, but know once you go back to get your masters, you normally have to just focus on your specialty.
