What would be your thoughts about double-majoring in Computer Science and Music Education?

badoil_49 asked:

I feel that by majoring in one course and minoring in the other would restrict me in the long run. I plan to do be a band director and/or do some computer programming.

The reason I want to double-major is so that I could be a full-time band director, and then could do computer stuff at night or on the weekends. It would also give me a job to do during the summer when school’s out.

I would not be able to direct a band with a music minor, and I wouldn’t be chosen for programming stuff with only a computer minor. As far as I see, this is the best way to go.

I’m well aware that these two fields aren’t very related, and I would most likely have to take 2 more years of college (preferrably one). This would work out the best to make this all work in my opinion.

So, do you think this is a possibility? Has anyone had something similar? Any comments? It’s very much appreciated.

(If it means anything, I plan to attend UW-Madison.)

The computer field is one of those great career fields where if you can do the job and have the gumption, you don’t always necessarily have to have the degree. Accomplishments, who you know (who you volunteer for) what you know, speaks a lot to your abilities.

Teaching on the other hand isn’t as forgiving. From the career plans you describe, it sounds like you don’t need to major in both (unless you just WANT to be in college for the next 6 years and being poor to do it) you would be better off majoring in education and earning a computer science and IT minor.
