What to do? Stick it out longer or move as fast as I can?
Luke asked:
So here is my problem. Currently, I’m at the Crane School of Music in Potsdam, NY. It’s a school with some weight to it’s name, particularly for the music education program I’m in. So far (it’s only been 2 weeks now), it’s been okay, but I really am having strong second thoughts. First of all, it is not an effortless thing. Although I realize the fact that college is not easy, wherever you are, it’s not the kind of hard work I’m finding myself enjoying at all. And although at first I could see myself teaching music for the rest of my life, I just don’t see it happening anymore. I’m a material person, so I would prefer a job that at least might be better paying. Another thing that matters tremendously to me is fashion. I read Vogue almost religiously, cover to cover every issue. The thing is I know that it is an extremely difficult industry to get into. My dream job would be to write for Vogue or another such magazine, but I don’t know if it’s worth the risk involved. Any advice? Help:(

You got where you are somehow. Was it talent? Hard work? You’ve only given this 2 weeks for Pete’s sake. Maybe you should think about this a little longer or talk it over with a professor you like?
Yeah, very few people write for Vogue. Better make up your mind before you are stuck with a profession you can’t make a living at or don’t want.
A dilema indeed.
I am usually some one who says, do what YOU LOVE.
My instinct on this one though, sways the OTHER way, I am not sure why.
My feeling is for you to finish the year out and then you are better placed to make that call.
In the meantime, (if you have the time) do a journalism course by corespondence ( the beauty of this kind of course is there is no time frame in which you MUST finish, this gives flexability and less preasure). There are many out there. ( I did my writing diploma through the writing school)
Then you will have some insight into how INTERESTED you are in writing. Reading a mag is one thing, WRITING for it is quite another thing. If it ignites a passion in you then you will KNOW what you need to do.
I wish you well in your decision making process.
If you quit now, you will quit for the rest of your life. Stick it out, buddy. You’ll be better for it in the end. Nothing worth anything is free or easy.
Jeesh, when did I become a responsible adult? LOL
