music ed major- go to community college first?
Josh G asked:
i want to major in music education, and my parents want me to stay at home for first 2 years and go to a inexspensive community college first? is that a good idea? the community college only has 2 people in thier “band” so pretty much their music program really sucks. would i save a litle money by going to the community college first. or would i end up being in school longer??

I’m a music education major. NO!!!! It’s not. You HAVE to go to a 4 year college. If you do this, You’ll be going to school for 6+ years. My freshman year I had 11 music classes the first semester and 11+ the rest of the semesters. Your whole scedule is going to be music classes and there’s no room to breathe. My day started at 8AM with Piano class and Ended at 7:30 with concert band. It’ll cost you more in the long run. I did all of my general English, Science and history either over the summer or during breaks. Music ed majors who go to universities can barely do it in 4 years. For a degree you need so much theory and 4 years with the university instructor on your major instrument.
I hate to say it, but I hope you can play at a very advanced level (like 16, 32nd notes), because at an audition you have to. You have to play for judges about 20 mins worth of music and know all the scales. You take a theory test too. I’m not trying to be mean, but if you can’t do the above, they’ll boot you so fast it won’t even be funny.
if you can’t afford 4 years in a normal institution or can not handle these courses, change your major
